THREE years ago he was playing football in the Second Division with Forfar Athletic. This week he was sharing the same stage as Carlos Tevez, Gabriel Heinze and Javier Mascherano.
Falkirk skipper Darren Barr was an unused substitute for Scotland when they took on Diego Maradona's Argentina at Hampden on Wednesday night.
But he still found himself warming up on the sidelines alongside players from some of the world's most famous clubs, including Napoli, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.
At 23-years-old Barr is already the youngest captain in the SPL and, despite not making an appearance in the 1-0 friendly defeat at the national stadium, he's still come a long, long way from his loan spell at Station Park back in 2005.
On his subsequent return to Westfield, the defender, a graduate from the Falkirk Football Academy, soon made the break-through into John Hughes' first team and has been an ever-present since.
Many believed that an international call-up was then inevitable after his consistent displays in the seasons that followed, which eventually came in the 0-0 draw with Northern Ireland in August – making him the first Falkirk player to be capped since John White in 1959.
And Barr says he's loving every minute of being involved in George Burley's squad, but is eager to continue moving forward in his professional career.
"It was a bit unexpected to get called up for Scotland but it's been a great experience so far," he said.
"I've been learning a lot and I think I have grown up a wee bit as well.
"Guys like David Weir have been great with me, and then you have Stephen McManus and Gary Caldwell, who all play with big teams. Terry Butcher has been excellent as well.
"I'm willing to learn and only just in the door so I just get on with it, but I have faith in myself and my ability.
"It's great training with Scotland but you still kind of want to move forward as well, by getting a game, in order to progress."
Barr is contracted to the Bairns until 2010 yet is attracting attention from a number of clubs, both north and south of the border, who are keeping close tabs on his development.
However, for now, he's fully focussed on his current job at hand – with Falkirk and the national side.
"The guys we have at the club like Jackie McNamara, Lee Bullen and Neil McCann are winners and you want to be a winner yourself," he said.
"But even when the results don't go well then you still hope you're doing your job as you should be.
"I know we have a good enough team at Falkirk, though, and if the club is going well then hopefully that will help me with the national team."
Barr will wear the captain's armband again this Saturday when his side take on Hearts at Tynecastle.
Neil McCann will not play at his former stomping ground, however, due to a hamstring strain.
Carl Finnigan, meanwhile, is hoping to make a return to full training in the near future following a mystery viral infection and Tam Scobbie is also stepping up his rehabilitation after a groin injury.
Other than other long-term absentee Brian Allison, John Hughes should have a full squad to choose from. Kick-off in Edinburgh is at 3 p.m.
