WhatsApp was targeted by an “advanced cyber actor” which exploited a major vulnerability in the messaging app to install spyware.

The company said a “a select number of users” had been chosen by an “advanced cyber actor” in a breach uncovered earlier this month.

The spyware gave hackers the ability to take over the functions of mobile phone operating systems remotely.

WhatsApp said the vulnerability has been fixed, but is urging users to update the app to its most recent version to provide the highest level of security.
