AN ASTONISHING £60,000 was raised for Strathcarron Hospice at the weekend when 1000 fundraisers became the first to walk across the new Clackmannanshire Bridge.

The sponsored walk brought adults and children together as they crossed the £120 million bridge three days before it opened.

Each walker paid £10 to register and pledged to raise at least £30 for the hospice.

But, as the tremendous total shows, most managed to blow that figure out the water.

Angela Gillies, the hospice's fundraising manager, said: "It was a
fabulous day; it was the best event we've had.

"We are absolutely delighted with the money raised. It's fantastic.

"We had wonderful weather, the scenery was lovely and there was a great atmosphere."

Falkirk Provost Pat Reid and Strathcarron's director Irene McKie joined walkers on the 2.4km–long bridge on Sunday.

Everyone who completed the trek received a t–shirt and medal, both specially commissioned for the event.

Among those taking part were Carron Brownies, Girl Guides from Denny and Bonnybridge, and Brownie commissioners.

Fiona Buchanan, one of the leaders from 2nd Bonnybridge Brownies, said nearly all the girls in her pack took part, raising £1500.

She added: "The girls loved ever minute of it.

"Our new Brownies made their Promise on the bridge to make it a unique, historic day that they can look back on."
Another fundraiser was 84–year–old Bobby Wilson from Shieldhill.

Mr Wilson, a keen walker who had a knee replacement last year, had raised £358 by Sunday, but wants to raise even more.

He said: "I'm secretary of the Alcan 30 Year Club so I'll be taking my T–shirt along to the next meeting and telling them that all donations would be gratefully accepted."
