YOUNGSTERS will benefit from £200,000 of improvements to neighbourhood parks.
But one councillor asked what constituted a park after one in her Stenhousemuir ward was missed out from a district-wide review.

Members of the policy committee rubberstamped a proposal to spend £125,000 doing up Camelon Public Park, as well as Br
oomage, Fankerton, California and Limerigg Parks. There will also be £75,000 spent upgrading the play area at Duncan Stewart Park in Bonnybridge.

Director of community services Maureen Campbell said the work was proposed after public consultation.

However, Councillor Lynda Kenna said: "What constitutes a park? A local park in my area has been missed out. There is no grass in the park in Gerald Terrace but it has a red shale pitch."

The director said she was not aware of the park in question but would have it checked out. However, she pointed out that the public often became confused between what is open space and a designated park.

An SNP amendment to refer the park development plan to full council was defeated. The opposition group was unsuccessful in arguing that "the park strategy is the ownership of the entire council" and should be determined by all councillors.

A review of football pitch provision across the Falkirk Council area had still to be completed, said Ms Campbell. She said the delay was due to staff illness but was being dealt with as a matter of urgency.
